Heffel has connected passionate collectors worldwide with outstanding works of art since its founding in 1978. Today, Heffel is Canada’s leading auction house with the largest and most experienced team of fine art specialists and offers premium client service to sellers and buyers internationally. The gallery has held over 200 live and online auctions. In 2018, Heffel was ranked among the top-ten auction houses in the world by Art + Auction.
The gallery was founded by Kenneth Heffel, an industrialist and art collector, who invested his heart and soul into building the business. He opened a small gallery in a heritage building on Vancouver’s established South Granville Gallery Row and quickly built a reputation for effectively managing and selling large collections of Canadian masterworks. As Heffel’s success grew, the firm became known for its white-glove auction sessions of Canadian Post-War and Contemporary Art and Fine Canadian Art. Heffel also introduced the innovative approach of dividing their semi-annual live auctions into separate sessions, which allowed collectors to focus on specific periods of interest.
Heffel’s fall 2016 live auction saw some impressive milestones, including Lawren Harris’ iconic Mountain Forms achieving monumental sales of over $1 million each. It was the highest-grossing auction in Heffel history and set a new artist record for Harris’s work at auction. Also sold were Emily Carr’s War Canoes, Alert Bay and Scorned as Timber, each of which drew impressive results from bidders from around the world.
