What Does a Computer Technician Do?

Computer Technicians work in a variety of settings, from retail shops to large technology companies. They are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining personal computers, mobile devices, servers and other related technology. They also document occurrences of hardware failure, troubleshoot issues and perform basic software upgrades. Many small businesses don’t have a full-time IT professional on their staff, so relying on third-party contracting services can be a great way to get the job done. Is computer technician good?

In addition to technical skills, a good computer technician should have excellent customer service abilities. They may need to explain complicated tech problems in a way that a non-technical person can understand. This requires patience, attentiveness and a positive attitude as they assist clients with their issues.

Other responsibilities can include troubleshooting issues, upgrading firmware and software systems, addressing network and connectivity problems and updating security systems. They might also need to adjust access rights for company employees, issue new computers and participate in onboarding or offboarding of personnel to ensure consistent IT function.

The minimum educational requirement for most computer technicians is a high school diploma, but an associate degree in IT or a related field can help you stand out from the competition. A bachelor’s degree in IT is often a better option, as it will give you more opportunities for career advancement and can lead to a higher pay scale. It can take longer to earn a bachelor’s degree, but the extra time in school will usually be worth it when you start working.
